Christmas Card Dilemma

Can I please take a moment to say how incredibly excited I am about the holidays? In all honesty, this has been a pretty tough year for me. Just a lot of ups and downs throughout the course of the 2010 and I am very much looking forward to celebrating the holidays with my friends and family and ringing in 2011 – a year which I hope and pray will bring new beginnings and better times!

Steven and I are hosting Thanksgiving at our home this year. I’m so excited! My first official holiday at my house! I’m breaking out the fine china and we are in charge of roasting the turkey. Talk about big time responsibilities! Needless to say – I’m fretting away about getting everything in order before next Thursday.

Which kind of leads me to the point of this post….

It’s time order Christmas cards. The past two years that Steven and I have been married, I sent generic cardstock Christmas cards – primarily because I waited too late to order a cute photocard. NOT THIS YEAR! I absolutely refuse to send a generic Christmas card again. I really want to take a family picture of Steven, myself & the pups in front of our Christmas tree to create a holiday card. Plus I want a recent photo of us, because well, I’m a brunette now – oh did I forget to mention that???

Proper etiquette suggests that Christmas cards should be mailed the Monday following Thanksgiving so that your friends and family will receive their cards the first week of December. But I don’t usually put my Christmas tree up until the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Which means I wouldn’t be able to order my Christmas cards until the Saturday after Thanksgiving at the earliest – and then I wouldn’t receive them until the first week of Christmas.

Once again – I haven’t planned this out very well!

So here’s the real dilemma: I could go ahead and put up my Christmas tree this weekend so I can take the family picture and order the Christmas cards this weekend and have plenty of time to get my cards out. But – we are hosting Thanksgiving at our house next Thursday. You can’t have Christmas decorations out during Thanksgiving dinner – that’s a conflict of holiday spirit!

So what do I do? Put up the Christmas tree and make my living room look all holiday pretty for the Christmas card then tear everything down for a week? Move the Christmas tree into the guest bedroom for Thanksgiving Day? How difficult do you think it would be to move a fully decorated 7ft tree without breaking anything?

AGH!!! Why do I do this every year!?!?!

I just want some pretty Christmas cards – is that really too much to ask for???

you could set up the tree and just decorate the front that will be shown in the picture. then you could undecorate it and move it into the guest room where it'll be out of sight which shouldn't be too hard and not too bad to just take 1/2 a trees worth or less of decorations off!

I agree with Natalie! It shouldn't be bad if you just do minimal decorating so it's not the whole entire tree.

Love your hair!

Ha, I hope I never have to host Thanksgiving. It's way too daunting to me!

Personally, I never knew there was a date to get Christmas cards out, as long as they got there before Christmas, I thought you were in the clear:) I'm kind of screwed too if thats etiquette:)

OK soo call me crazy but here is an idea- do you have any friends that have already/ about to decorate for Christmas. Could you go to their house and do the pic?! I mean I get its not YOUR tree but still thats really not the point! As long as it is a pretty tree just take the dogs over there do the pic and TADA?! haha Just a thought!

I think you should just put the tree up when you normall do (after thanksgiving), take the pictures, and then send them when they come in. Worst case, they are a week later than normal... Not a big deal, I don't think!

I love the fact that you are so organized!! Well done! We are waiting for baby to be born before we order the personalized cards. I hope baby arrives in time!

I didn't know that you were supposed to send Christmas cards out the Monday after Thanksgiving. I definitely won't have mine out by then. And I get Christmas cards from other people pretty much right up til Christmas, so I would say if you're a week late, no big deal. I'm sure people will get cards later than yours.

Of COURSE you can have your tree up!! No big deal, girl ... my sister has had hers up for a few weeks :)

What if you just do a family photo, not necessarily with Christmas decorations?

I say to heck with the etiquette! take your pics after you set up like normal and then just send them. No one is going to be offended that they don't get their Christmas card late. They will just appreciate that you thought of them =)

I like Natalie's idea of decorate the part that will be photographed and stash the tree! A thinker, that one!

:) Um... Brunette! Welcome to the club! Love it BTW! :)

Yay for your first holiday in the new home.. hope it's a memorable one!

I would just do things the way you normally do with the tree! I receive Christmas cards from people all during the month of december (as I send mine out at different times myself!)..I dont see what the big deal is about getting them out so early. I'd rather have my house look like its decorated for Thanksgiving on Thanksgiving..not Christmas!! Enjoy each holiday as it comes!!!

Love the brunette on you! I say who cares about proper etiquette.. as long as you get it out before Christmas, your good to go!!

I say put it up and leave it up. A little Christmas cheer during Thanksgiving would be fine! :)

I always take pictures from last year's celebration to use on this year's Christmas card. It doesn't solve your now-brunnette issue though.

Your hair is so cute! Everyone is going brown for the winter - I'm loving it!

I wish I could offer another suggestion for your photo dilemma, but I think all the ladies above me covered just about all the choices! Hopefully it all works out for you!

I AM LOVEEEEEEEEEE-ING THE HAIR!!! :) You look so so beautiful! And for the xmas and thanksgiving dilemma... you know.. since the whole fam is coming over... I would just say put the tree up. Then that solves all your problems.. My mom normally waits til after thanksgiving too.. but last year everyone was in town for thanksgiving.. so she put the tree up - and it was actually wonderful! :) So maybe that will help ;) hopefully :) hehe I MISSED YOU!

I am having the same problem. I am planning to put our tree up on Friday after Thanksgiving, take our picture on Saturday-order the cards the same day(important to have them already picked out and addresses for everyone). Hopefully in the mail by Tuesday/Wednesday?? I am also dropping our invitations for our Christmas party (the 18th) on Wednesday-so they will arrive on Friday and Saturday. I thought it was too weird to have guests receive them before Thanksgiving, but hate that they won't be in mailboxes at least four weeks in advance. Let me know what you decide!

I like the set up the tree and then stash it idea too.

Although I am contemplating putting mine up properly this weekend, I'm feeling really festive!

Oh and that hair colour is just amazing on you, you look great!

put your tree up - after all your mom has hers up. And let your mom take the picture of you, Steven and the pups! What more could you ask for? HA HA!
