I Need A Home Ec Class

The housewife in me is filled with *shame* as I type these words.

Your eyes are not playing a trick on you. That is my husband sewing a button back onto his pants. Why, you might ask? Because I don't know how to sew. Not even a silly button.

I think I'm missing that gene. The crafty, skilled with your hands, woman can make anything gene. My mom has it. Lord knows my Mema had it. My sister is even pretty good with domestic affairs such as sewing - but not me.

I think it's time I enrolled myself into a Home Ec class. Maybe a "Domestic For Dummies" tutorial of some sort might do the trick.

I watched last night as Steven skillfully sewed a button back onto his pants and my womanhood cracked just a tiny bit. Even Bauer wondered what was going on! I swear he shot me a look that said, "This is woman's work mom!"

To make matters worse, Steven kindly offered to iron my dress pants after finishing up with his pants. He wasn't being a jerk. He simply offered to iron my pants because he knows how much I hate ironing and he was willing to do this chore for me.

Needless to say I went to bed feeling like a fraud. I'm a wife, and I own a house. But I'm nowhere near the housewife my Mema trained me to be.

I woke this morning with the urge to bake a pie or crochet a blanket. I'm pretty sure I dreamed about becoming a domestic goddess last night......

PS - Those aren't Steven's glasses. They are mine - he was just trying to thread the needle and needed a little help.  :)

You aren't alone! Ryan does all the sewing and ironing in my house. I can bake a cake but he has to decorate it...I have no craftiness in me. :(

Um, so you would be horrified to learn that I drop our laundry off at my MIL's to be ironed? We refer to her as the "magical ironing fairy". I wish I was joking...ha!

didn't even realize it was Steven until you said it. First thought is..who is this man on Ambers page...what is going on? Glad you filled me in.

awwww!! =/ You aren't alone pretty girl. hands-on craftiness isn't for everyone. I know my little sis struggles big time with it where it generally comes pretty easily to me. The Home Ec class could be fun =) Those things aren't what define you as a wonderful wife and an awesome woman =) PLUS if you don't ENJOY to do them...it isn't worth being able to do.

I can't do anything that people consider domestic... ANYTHING... cook, clean, sew, etc. I've actually discussed this with guys I've dated in the past.

Wow I just realized why I'm single haha

You're not alone. I've taken jackets and pants to the tailor just to have buttons sewn back on! And iron? We don't even own an iron =)

Haha, I want to learn to sew! In my family, my dad had to teach my mom how to sew! I can sew a button, but I want to learn how to do some serious craft projects on a sewing machine. Maybe I'll get one for Christmas??

Oh, don't worry about that!!! Before last year I couldn't sew a button on either. I took home ec when I was in school and STILL couldn't! I learned to sew while my husband was deployed last year. (Extra free time = new hobby) I promise you there are TONS of good tutorials on blogs teaching how to even hand sew a little bit. =) Even if you have no desire to learn, there's nothing wrong with that.

I had to sew a button on one of my husbands shirts last night (because I forgot to pick up the 40 shirts of his at the dry cleaner). It got me thinking how I was robbed of a home ec class. It would have been nice to have been taught some survival skills. Luckily the women in my family have shown me a thing or two, but I was then concerned about others who may not have been so lucky. As I debated this issue to myself (while sewing away) I concluded that if someone was in desperate need they could always google how to do it and there would probably be an instructional video out there. Problem solved. Funny we had similar issues and thoughts last night!

I also don't know how to sew even though my mom has tried to teach me.

She yells at me because I take little things like that to the dry cleaners and they charge me like $3. She says "you're on a budget!"

yes, but that is ONE thing I am willing to pay for. and yes, my husband knows ho wto sew but by the time he actually does it, I would have gotten it back by the cleaners.

We are in the same situation! My husband can sew, make a bed better and fold laundry 1000 times better than me! I say it's his Naval past but I am lacking in the homemaking department as well.

haha Don't feel bad--I can't sew either, so my husband has to sew everything too!

Oh hunny! Don't worry about that at all. Sure it's good to learn how to, but don't feel inadequate! I'm sure there are a ton of things YOU can do that other people can't:-)

Oh girl, I know exactly how you feel. Big Man does all the domestic stuff around the house better than I do. If you find the 'Domestic For Dummies'...please sign me up too :)

Hey girl! I didn't know you were back to blogging...woohoo!!!! I feel the same way that you do sometimes. My sweet hubby is more than willing (and able) to help out around the house with "girl" chores, but instead of feeling immensely grateful, I feel immensely guilty. I think we just need to get over ourselves...no?
